2018

2018 was notable for the high quality of squash from the beginning of qualifying. With some serious talent awaiting in the main draw, all the players trying to get through qualifying were very sharp and looking dangerous! Unfortunately none of the four qualifiers managed to cause an upset after progressing, although Carlos Cornes Ribadas (returning for 2019) pulled the best out of Peter Creed with a 77 minute best of five thriller.

It was 2017’s beaten semi finalist Joel Makin though, who really shone from start to finish – rarely looking troubled and always with an extra gear when needed, his form here was an accurate predictor of a meteoric rise in the rankings which was laying in wait for the Welshman throughout the remainder of the season and beyond. Coming through to take the title without losing a game, beating Asim Khan (Q), George Parker (5), Youssef Soliman (3) and finally Peter Creed (4), Joel showed a glimpse of the form which 18 months later has taken him to the brink of a place in the world’s top ten.
